The value of different perspectives

Nate Schwarz's perspective shows the tree closer up and in more detail.

By The DMIS Star Staff

Because of our school’s special mission to deliver an outstanding, globally minded education, DMIS students spend a lot of time thinking about how people’s different perspectives matter. Why? Because understanding different views helps us find solutions to common problems. Because understanding different views helps us build stronger relationships with people who haven’t grown up in the same kinds of environments we have. Because understanding different views helps us see things as they really are, not just as we like to think they are.

To illustrate our point, take a look at the pictures on this page. They’re all of a single, young tree on the DMIS campus. Yet, that one tree looks different when the pictures are taken by different people — all of whom have their own, unique perspectives of value.

Sylvia Lacher's perspective of the tree captures the cloudy skies on Nov. 1, 2011.

Avery Bleichfeld's perspective of the tree is much different because he thought to turn the camera sideways before taking this picture.
